THE ALTERNATIVE MARKET and that means us....

Hello Foresters, a group of people that have been involved in the forest e.g. myself (movement and motives), tariq who used to run the film night and several other personalities from issue based organisations around edinburgh and places further afield have got together to develop THE ALTERNATIVE MARKET, the first action of F.R.E.E a not for profit organisation based in Edinburgh. I posted information about the fact finding collaborative meetings and discussions regarding the start up of this group several months ago on this forum.

The alternative market is run by F.R.E.E (the foundation for the return of equitable economy), which aims to contribute to the restoration of markets in cities and towns of the UK as a means of strengthening community, reducing overheads and developing an alternative (and valuable) space for independent traders and artists to operate and develop audiences.

The Alternative Market and Arts Space manifests itself on the 15th and 16th of August 2009 on the Square of the Academy, Edinburgh Fringe Venue 70, Henderson Row, Stockbridge. On this iteration we address the issues of local sustainability and collaboration within the City of Edinburgh (and beyond) during and after the Festival Events.

The large square connected to the Academy will hold over 30 market stalls and will include areas for street theatre, live acoustic acts, contemporary dance, author readings and discussion groups and issue based organisations. Several Artists have also been invited down to display work within the square. We aim through our open and inclusive approach to organically develop the impact, value and relevance of the space and we invite professionals, serious emerging operators and volunteers to get in contact with any suggestions they may have for their participation.
