Re: web site aims?
Splash page - bad if it has no actual content. I did try explaining this in the Meeting of Hell :/ Maybe this analogy would have helped: Jared said, "When we have clients who are thinking about Flash splash pages, we tell them to go to their local supermarket and bring a mime with them. Have the mim...

Actually the new Mozilla site is a nice mix of big statement ( = splash), project links ( = sister sites), and dynamic stuff.

Re: site inspiration, etc
I was thinking about what Stevie said at the meeting, he said something about an events page that when you visit it the first thing you see is today's event. How about this: make posting events work very similarly to making posts in tumblr. Except you have to fill in a form with the date of the eve...

Re: site inspiration, etc
One thing I brought up in the meeting was a hybrid of big splash and dynamic content. I'll have to have a longer dig for something that really shows that, but here are some in the same general vein: - http://www.operadeparis.fr/cns11/live/onp/ -- big image at the top, and down the right there is a l...

Re: web meet-o-rama?
wow. Gee. That's constructive. I'm pretty sure I've said more concrete things like talking about what pieces of the site we want on the front page. This might well be clearer in person where I can see blank looks and then explain. The thing is though, if you initiate a technical discussion, expect ...

I have been trying to channel the discussion to non-technical stuff that everyone can brings ideas on, and the non-techies keep moving it back to technical stuff.
Non-techie guys: either FOCUS or leave the techie stuff to the techies.

Re: event calendar
Hi Milk I can't find where you've posted about events that go over midnight appearing on two days. But yes, they do: I've just tested this on a classic calendar view. It's pretty much by design -- the calendar has no way of knowing that 10pm-2am is fundamentally different to say 3pm-11am (like a 2-d...

Re: closing a can of worms
Some of us would like meetings held during working hours to be productive and non-snarky. I had an overwhelming impression from the closed thread that I was either speaking Greek or at a brick wall; I would like to think this goes better in a meeting especially if I am giving up work hours. At any r...

Re: closing a can of worms
Why does the doodle timetable only start at 12? I could do Saturday morning, for instance.
It occurs to me I'm around at the Forest for choir on Tuesday night. So I'm free for a chat after that (9ish), but not a proper meeting as I'll be wanting to head home.

Re: our website, so big and scrolly
I do not think it is on to chop peoples designs up and implement them ad-hoc I agree. Which is why we figure out what the page elements actually are first, before the aesthetics. Because otherwise, designs will get chopped up. And, to be honest, any designer on the web will have to accept that as a...

Re: our website, so big and scrolly
http://www.theforest.org.uk/bb/download/file.php?id=594 I like. But if we approach design like this we will run into all sort of complexity. I like it, but I also think the top image is too big, because it puts the news and events under the fold. If other designers will similarly decide where to pl...

And also repeating: there is little point in producing a design until you know what you're designing. We start by deciding what the purpose of the site is: what does a visitor to the site want to do? The visual look of the site and what it runs on are two completely separate things. (I feel I am repeating myself here.)
We can make Drupal look like anything.

Chris, maybe you should get your Tumblr site ready go go live? Milk and Joachim, maybe you guys should have one last blast at making Drupal beautiful. That's kinda hard in that I don't know what you mean by 'beautiful'. People in this thread seem to be mixing up the purpose of the site, the functio...

Re: our website, so big and scrolly
Side not: Joachim, no, the table-based non-semantic HTML would not need completely rejigging. That would be missing point. It works as it is, and it looks good! :) Yes, it would. I'm certainly not going to be a party to putting anything on the web that is table-based layouts. Unless you have a time...

/me looks on the first page of the thread... Oh right, those skeletons. Nice artwork :) First, a technical point: that HTML is table-based and non-semantic, so it would need its code completely rejigging. And I agree with the previous post that it's kinda faffy to navigate. Something like this is fu...

There's nothing Tumblr does that that the current site can't be made to do over another afternoon of me & Milk slogging at it (especially if supplied with regular top-ups of coffee and cake). And yup, the scrolliness is a feature of Tumblr too. It's generally a feature of the fact that it is current...

Re: our website, so big and scrolly
Yeah, I remain in favour of tumblr (or equivalent, free software hosted blog service) and simple, hand-crafted HTML&CSS for front pages. Assimilating these ideas into drupal just seems to be a lot of time and effort, Really, no. It's a matter of an hour or so to get Drupal set up to do what Tumblr ...
